In the Wilderness

This past Sunday (the first Sunday in Lent), we heard Mark's version of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness:
And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him (Mark 1:12-13 NRSV).
I've sometimes wondered what the wilderness might have looked like. Perhaps some of my photos from Israel taken back in October 2008 give us some idea.

It's unlikely that Jesus was ever in the area, but the starkness of Masada and environs puts the word "wilderness" into good biblical perspective:
