A Basic Fact in Modern Life

“The depreciation of the intellect, with the exaltation in the place of it of the feelings or the will, is, we think, a basic fact in modern life, which is rapidly leading to a condition in which men neither know nor care anything about the doctrinal content of the Christian religion, and in which there is in general a lamentable intellectual decline.”

Reminds me of the last verse in Judges,

"In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what he thought best."

The same holds true today when Jesus is no longer viewed by many as Lord, but just as a man to emulate.

It is interesting that Machen saw the coming primacy of feelings in 1925. We have seen the full fruit of that since the 70's, but it took a good eye to note it 50 years beforehand.
